Oil & Gas has transportation needs in different segment of the streams – Upstream, Midstream & Downstream.
Transportation involving Upstream – In this stream, there is major transportation activity involving movement engineering equipments & consumables (similar to MRO in aviation industry). Given the difficult & routinely inaccessible nature of the Drilling locations, logistics involves specialized services and its associated players with their equipment. Controlling & Managing costs within reasonably defined parameters have crucial roles. This sector is not volume driven repeated movements, rather specialized one-off and possibly without precedent or repetition in some cases too.
Transportation involving Midstream – In many cases, midstream movement is done through pipelines. However in select cases, midstream transportation is through trucks, trailers & rail. Such movements demand high degree handling vendors if third party trucks are involved. If they are in house fleet, it will require good planning of Fleet so wastage is minimized. Industries such as O&G that deal heavily on high movement of regular cargo with in-house or 3rd party fleet can leverage sophistication of OLC Fleet Management & Freight Settlement modules to achieve efficient business process and minimize wastage.
Transportation involving Downstream – In this stream there is a high degree of Retail deliveries being made and with a mixture of geographies covered. Geographies include Highway stations & City stations, City Hotels, Residences and the like. Demand can be regular or Adhoc. Both scenarios need efficient business process required to ensure smooth and time bound transportation. With the advent of IOT even demand management can be automatic from the consumption points. Mobility setup will allow a good degree of flexibility in managing the final dispensation activity such as providing updates, printing invoice, carry maintenance and the like.
